At the trailer launch of the film, director Shoojit Sircar spoke to News Helpline about the preparation of the film and said,"There are not many documents available on Sardar Udham. How he went to London, there is no document proof. Did he go there via the sea route or the land route, not much is known. Like this, Sardar Udham was also elusive in nature. I went to Jallianwala Bagh in 1999 through my college, I was deeply affected.

After that, I started reading about it and so I went to almost every library in the country which has documents on Shaheed Udham Singh. I found out information from the survivors of the Jallianwala massacre. I was so moved with all of that, so I decided that I have to tell this sacrifice to the world and I waited for 21 years. "

When asked whether the story of Sardar Udham's sacrifice is relevant for today's generation, the director said,"It is relevant till date that is the reason I have made this film. If I did not have the passion , I would have not told this story. Sardar Udham was a normal person like us but he had an ideology with him. Ideologies always live. They were relevant at that time and are relevant today also ."

When asked why he did not wait for the film to release in the theatres, the director answered this by saying, “It’s a tricky question. There’s a destiny for every film and ‘Sardar Udham’ landed with Amazon Prime. When I shot the film, this wasn’t the situation. We shot the film for cinemas. However, I do not feel guilty that it’s releasing on (Amazon Prime Video).”

“We decided that this will go on the digital platform. I didn’t feel that this was a mistake I was making. I’m also quite impatient in nature when a film is done. I just want to quickly reach out to people” he added.
