Didn’t Try To Copy Mahatma Gandhi In Swatantrya Veer Savarkar Says Rajesh Khera

Rajesh Khera, known for his versatile acting skills, is set to portray the iconic Mahatma Gandhi in the upcoming film Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, says he didn’t try to copy the great man on-screen.

Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Randeep Hooda, the film aims to shed light on the life and teachings of Veer Savarkar while also paying tribute to Gandhi's influence on Indian history.

In a recent interaction with the media, Khera shared his thoughts on playing the role of Gandhi on-screen. He acknowledged the challenge of portraying a real-life figure as revered as Gandhi, stating, ““It was a difficult character, I think playing a real-life person on screen is tough, I am playing the role of Gandhi Ji, there are live footage of this great man across all medium, his get-up, the way he walked, talked, his manners, I mean it is all there and you must copy all that. I don’t think everyone is capable of copying someone, and if I had tried to copy Gandhi Ji, I would have certainly failed, I tried to incorporate little things in my performance, whatever little I know of the great man, I tried to adapt it.”

“He was a pure man, a humble man, very soft spoken, sincere, honest, and he believed in himself, a believer of his thought-process, he put his heart and soul into each action, I have tried to incorporate all that in my performance, hopefully I have done some justice to it and hope people like it” added Khera.

Khera expressed concern over the lack of mention of Savarkar in mainstream education and hopes that the film will serve as a respectful tribute to Savarkar, showcasing his teachings and respecting his legacy.

Sharing his reason for being part of the movie, Rajesh said, “Not many people know about Veer Savarkar, even when I was in school, there was not much mention of Savarkar in the books, not much is known about his life or contribution in history. So, this film is a respect to Veer Savarkar, showcasing his contribution and teachings.”

Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is a biographical film that aims to showcase the life and contributions of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, directed by Randeep Hooda. The film also stars Ankita Lokhande and Amit Sial in lead roles and is scheduled for theatrical release in India on March 22, 2024.
