Wanted To Explore And Understand The Enigma And Appeal Of Amar Singh Chamkila Says Imtiaz Ali
Imtiaz Ali, who is making a comeback with Amar Singh Chamkila, says he wanted to explore and understand the enigma and mass appeal of the singer, who met with such a violent end at a young age.
Imtiaz Ali along with Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra and AR Rahman graced the trailer launch of Amar Singh Chamkila in Mumbai.
When asked about picking such new subject for his movie, Imtiaz Ali said, “When you live in the cities, and this world of social media, you have this feeling of disconnect with a large mass of this country, and the world which lives villages, and doesn’t consume the same products as you. Sometimes I used to get this feeling that I am getting more and more distant from those people, whom we call masses.”
“And what is fascinating about Chamkila is that he was the entertainer of the masses. Those people we are often unable to see. It was very fascinating how this man is talking in the language that the masses understand, we all want to learn that language as communicators, but this man knew it. People were crazy about Chamkila, people used to fix their weddings according to Chamkila’s available dates to perform. So, I wanted to experience that kind of world, and what that worked, maybe I can put that into my own work.”
“Secondly, this enigmatic life of this musician, who is very popular, challenges the norms of the society, and at the peak of his youth, gets killed, you know, a very violent end. This happens everywhere in the world unfortunately, and this is an enigmatic character as well. I wanted to enter into that mind space as well. To understand Chamkila and his wife, the peak of their careers, also taking chances with their lives, and they ultimately have a violent end, I wanted to get into that enigma” added Imtiaz Ali.
